Courage as the Only Guide

When our children were young (4 years old and 8 months old), we were asked to uproot our family and move to Texas to plant a new church.  We did not know a single person there and had no idea how to go about “planting” a new church.  I knew that I needed to ask God for definitive signs that this is what God had planned for us.

We were currently living in West Michigan, and Texas seemed like a foreign country.

Well, as God does, my request was answered without any doubt in my mind.  During that time, the country song “God Bless Texas” was at the top of the charts. Literally every time I got in my car and turned on the radio, that song was playing!  As I was beginning to soften to the idea, but still not there, our family was out to dinner one evening.  I went to use the restroom and noticed that the entire place was wallpapered in newspaper.  I stood reading an article about “things to do with your kids”.  As a young mom, this intrigued me.  When I looked at the top of the article, it was from the Dallas Morning News.  I returned to the table and told my husband that God had given me the last sign I needed.  I knew this was where he was calling us.

Now, this may sound silly to some, but if we ask, God will provide what we need when approaching big things!  He only asks that we quiet our hearts and minds and listen for God’s answers.

Our first year there was tough; not going to try and say it wasn’t.  But as always, God provided and we had a flourishing ministry there.  It’s where I found my best friend, who has been by my side for the last 32 years.  It’s where we witnessed lives being changed, families becoming stronger, and the love and grace of our creator.  So, when you feel like the Cowardly Lion, ask God for some signs and then be ready for what you are sent!

I love this example from you, Tena, about how God speaks to us. it may be in symbols, in a song, or just a passing conversation. the important thing is to stay open to receiving it. Thank you!
