This Saturday, I want to share a short overview of a movement and a children’s story about how a community used art to transform a neighborhood—a neighborhood of faithful witnesses.
In 1970, residents took over the land underneath a highway. The land had initially been promised to the local community to become a park, but the local government reneged on its promise.
In a twelve-day standoff, protesters formed a human chain to signify the strong ties of the Chicano Neighborhood, a mix of Mexican-American and Indigenous residents. Here is an overview of how this group helped transform the neighborhood.
The location is now a museum, cultural center, park, and national historic landmark.
