The most mundane task was taking the trash out. Late on a beautiful, almost spring evening, I walked outside to bring my trash out, collapse some boxes, and drag the recycling bin to the curb.
It was a beautiful night, and I would have missed “IT” if I had focused only on this mundane task. But, alas, I looked up at the sky while collapsing my Spanx box, and I saw the trail of a rocket launch 50 miles away from the Kennedy Space Center.
I stood there as a faithful witness of God’s work in the world, amazed by the beauty of a rocket launch, with its trail of fire in the night sky. I could view the launch for a total of 6 minutes, but I paused in wonder. I am, by habit, always a sky watcher, fascinated by the clouds during the day, a sunset, and the stars in the evening.
I did not have my camera to capture the moment, as why would I take my phone with me while taking out the trash? With my momentary pause, I enjoyed the view and felt the need to pray.
The song “Rocket Man” by Bernie Taupin and Elton John reminds us of that wonder and awe. A few years ago, the band Little Big Town covered the song and shared an imaginative video capturing a child wishing to be a Rocket Man.
