The Light slowly breaking forth on the horizon…

My family is Scandinavian and I have been to each country in Scandinavia many times. When I visited in the winter months, the many hours of darkness overwhelmed me.

In the dead of winter, The Land of the Midnight Sun in Iceland and northern Norway means there are just a few hours of sunlight each day.

I remember visiting Iceland in the dead of winter many years ago and my sense of day and night got completely turned around. My body was used to waking up with the sun and becoming tired when it became dark outside.

Since it was dark outside almost all day and night, I was tired all of the time while there!

But the experience helped me understand in a more profound way the power of “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome the light.”

This year you might feel there is more darkness around you. You might feel like the light has waned or been completely snuffed out in your life. If you have any feeling like that, this season is for you…this message is for you.

Look at the horizon…there is light slowly breaking forth. It might be very hard to see it. You might have to strain your eyes or neck to see it, but it is there. Light is coming forth in your life.

How do I know this with such confidence?

Because of God’s promise to us…”the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome the light.” It’s God’s promise, and that makes it trustworthy and true. It’s God’s promise so no one can take it away from us, or turn it off, or shut it down.

We can deny this promise. We can turn away from this promise. We can ignore this promise.

It doesn’t matter if we do all of these things.

God still works. God is present. God’s promises are everlasting. And those promises are for you.

Look for the light. You are a child of the Light.

  1. Thank you, Reverend Elise! Your words remind me that in science, darkness is not an actual entity, it is only the absence of light. God’s light will indeed overpower all darkness!

  2. Beautiful. Thank you Elise.
