I have a few friends who love birds… some are bird watchers, some love feeding them and some do both. One friend can identify a bird by its beak, color of feathers or song. Growing up in an urban city, I can say that there’s something about feeding birds that is common for many of us… it’s fun, but we also feel like we are helping to care for these creatures God created.
At a recent Marble Church’s Racial Justice Series, An Homage to Black Trailblazers of Theater & Performance, one of the artists, Ms. Q. Smith, sang the song “Feed the Birds” from a role she performed in Mary Poppins, the Broadway musical production. Before she sang it, she said, “the song is about changing the world with the little bit you have.” The song invites us to do something, even if it seems small, and by doing that it can change the world for others.
This song reminds me of a Bible verse (Matthew 10:29) where God promises to take care of us – ‘Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.’ Wonderfully and graciously, there are a lot of Bible passages that remind us of how God cares for us, but there are also many passages about caring one for another. For starters, Jesus’ great commandment is to love one another… and that is embodied in being kind, gentle, generous and caring for others.
The invitation to “feed the birds” is really asking how can we feed others today? May these words remind us that we are called to care for one another, for the earth and for all its inhabitants. In doing so, perhaps our small acts of kindness can change the world.

Something to think about….
Such a lovely thought, and I have always cherished that song. As a child, it really touched my heart. Thank you, Sandy!
As a bird-owner and bird-friendly person, I thank you for those words of kindness! Thank you, Sandy!
Thank you Sandy. Matthew 6:25-34 also tells us about the birds and to not be anxious about anything. Today’s problems are enough and … today is a beautiful day to be in His presence.
Thanks June for the reminder of God’s care in these passages.
