Day 4: Holy Boldness–Gaining Courage through Christ

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.

Little did I realize that losing my job would set my heart in motion to something new.  Last September, as I ended my career as a graphic designer, I began to discern, pray, and be still as to what next. I knew and accepted that my next assignment would have to be in a place where service to and for others was at the forefront.

My last day at the job a colleague’s wishes (or should I say blessings) left me surprised and encouraged. She said, “Sandy remember these two things: ‘For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.’1 And, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.’” I left smiling, joyful and encouraged.

The next day presented some glimpses of hope I did not expect. Inside a Banana Republic store, I noticed a neon-lit sign that read “Find Your Adventure.” Shortly after, I walked by a book stand and found Harold Kushner’s Living a Life that Matters. Then I bumped into a great friend who gave me encouraging words. My steps were lighter as I felt hope in the air and thought, I can do this… I can “do what I love,” not just “love what I do,” as I serve others in a new place. I realized this new journey was going to take boldness, courage, persistence and trust.

I worked on my resume, met with a career counselor, networked with old and new friends, and searched on websites. I knew I was not alone; yes, there were moments of doubt, but more of reassurance. I was encouraged through scripture and prayers from family and friends and remained focused. The job came and I can say with confidence, I’m exactly in the place I need to be, sharing God’s gifts of love and compassion with others.

May this season of hope guide us to finding boldness and courage through Christ in unexpected ways as we trust Him with our plans. Amen
