Day 2 of Advent: An Advent Reading Plan

Luke 2 – The Message (MSG)

The Birth of Jesus

1-5 About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant

Traditions, practices are the foundation of our faith. The birth of our savior took place during the practice/tradition of traveling to one’s hometown for census taking.

We build our Advent traditions from many experiences – family, friends, stories shared, community preparations. One of my family traditions has been an Advent calendar. It has taken many forms over the years – stories, pictures, small gifts for each day or a candy treat behind a little door…some years a few music notes that finally became a verse of a Christmas song. One of the choices that is so connecting is the reading of scriptures that lace the threads of our faith together and help us live into the season.

The file included today is a nice start for readings to live into the season. An Advent calendar of traditional readings.

Blessings of the season in faith and fellowship.
